Week 12—Lauren’s Mom and a BBQ

Immediately after Easter break was another excursion—something I love about this program. There are always little surprises hidden in the week, because we generally don’t get the week’s schedule until a day or two before. We went to Bingen, which is a small city along the Rhine. Dr. Wasser led us on a tour around a small museum dedicated to Hildegard von Bingen, one of the only females mentioned in our History of Medicine class. We had lunch at a restaurant along the Rhine river and then made our way back to Bonn. Later that day, we met Lauren’s mom for dinner (it also happened to be Lauren’s birthday) and we spent the rest of the night eating and talking. Lauren and I sadly made our way back home to study for the 211 exam we had the next day.

On Wednesday, Lauren and I sort of officially decided to switch majors. We “kind of” took the 211 test, then went back to meet Lauren’s mom to hang out. The majority of this week consisted of rushing through school so that we could meet Lauren’s mom and her friend. It was really nice having them in Bonn, and showing them around Cologne. We ate some of the best food in Bonn that weekend too—we didn’t even know what we were missing.

Her mom left Saturday morning, so to distract Lauren from thinking about her mom, we decided to go hang out at the Rheinaue. Mitchell and Emily met us and we rented a paddle boat. We spent the whole day out on the water, and then we all went back to Astrid’s. Our host family and the neighbors on both sides of us were having a big BBQ, and they invited Mitchell and Emily to stay. The food was delicious (although nothing like a Texas BBQ), and the weather was perfect.

It was a quick and fun week, spent mostly hanging out and enjoying the weather. We knew we had a stressful time ahead with all the enmodes stuff coming up, so it was nice to sit and relax
