For this week we had a guest lecture on bioethics. I never
really like the scenarios they propose because they are often unrealistic. The
one scenario where pushing the fat man off the bridge will save five people tied
to the train tracks is pretty silly. If the fat man has enough mass to stop a
speeding train then the man is about to die anyway due to his sheer weight. I
am kidding of course but you kind of get the point. On Wednesday we were going
to shadow surgeons at the Uniklinik. When we first arrived at the UniKlinik
they spit us into two groups one going to the shadow the actual surgeons and
the other group to walk around the emergency rooms or something. The BMEN group
that did not get to see surgeons just had an extended tour of the hospital and
then waited in the waiting room which was pretty lame. They came again with
BIMS to see actual surgery but got put in the group that did nothing again
which was the group I was placed in as well. They were pretty mad and I would
be too. Fortunately there was some kind of children’s day so not much was going
on in the hospital so we all got to see surgeries. I am not sure why they
thought it was a good idea to split groups like that especially when one group
does nothing and the other gets to see surgeries up close. But I digress. I was
excited to see some surgeries at the Uniklinik.
