Finals week!
A brutal slog if there eve was one, but at least it was short. An entire day short, be exact. Which was nice, because my mind was completely blasted by the end of Thursday. After studying hard and fast for a week and a half, and dumping hours of work into our presentation, I was completely worn out. I felt confident though. Every final I've gotten grades back for has gone well, so there's still plenty of hope.
And our trip to Remagen was a really nice way to end the week. It's a small town about 20 minutes by train from Bonn. We went there to visit the Bridge of Remagen Peace Museum. It was built into one of the old towers at one end of the bridge. The bridge itself had been part of a major turning point during WW II, when the Allies captured and used it to move a huge number of troops across the Rhein in a very short span of time, and is thought to have contributed significantly to Allied victory.
The Museum was built by a veteran of the War who came back a pacifist and wanted to make a dedication to the memory of the soldiers who gave their lives in the conflict.
The story of how the Bridge is captured is pretty interesting, and I would definitely suggest looking it up if you ever get the chance. I'd try to relate it here, but I don't trust myself to relate it well, and I'd feel bad if I just copy/pasted it from somewhere else. If you're feeling really hardcore you can just head on out to Remagen for yourself and talk to the curator!
After that I spent the weekend hanging out with friends and my host family, enjoying the last Saturday and Sunday I had here in Germany. As bizarre as it was coming here, it almost seems even stranger to be leaving - quite possibly for good - after as short a time as only four months.
Well, however I feel about it, I'm coming home on Wednesday. So I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
