After our adventure through France we decided to have a little weekend getaway in Spain, well to be more specific Catalonia. Our trip to Mallorca the weekend before gave high hopes for what we might find in Barcelona. It was everything we were expecting and more.
Our first night we ventured around for tapas because let's be real they are fantastic, and they were. We loved the bike tour in Paris so much that we decided to do another in Barcelona. Our tour guide was awesome, so down to earth and funny and he even let us know about a Florence and the Machines concert happening later that night. Getting to see all of the city was so much fun, it is so different than anything we have seen in Europe so far. There's a beach, markets, cathedrals, mountains, and architecture that is so unique, you'll be staring at it for hours. After getting to see the city and the beach a little bit on the bike tour, we made our way back to some of the markets we saw to go explore. There was some really yummy food and cool pieces to check out there.
Remember that concert I mentioned? Well spontaneous concerts are the best concerts right? After checking out the markets we decided that we wanted to try to go to the concert which just so happened to be in the old Olympic Park on top of a mountain! It was a wild time trying to get there as the special lines were closed and even when we took a taxi we went to the wrong entrance of the huge stadium. We finally made it and got our tickets right at the door, 10 minutes or so before the show started. I've been a Florence and the Machines fan for awhile, so I loved getting to see them in person. Florence is so eccentric and out there, and I think she might be my spirit animal.
Our second and last day in Barcelona was spent doing some much needed tanning on the beach. We tried getting into the water, but it was unreasonably cold. I didn't realize how much I missed the beach until these past two weekends. We even completed the experience with some cornrows.....I still haven't decided if that part was a mistake or not. They came out within a couple of days though.
After some time on the beach we went to the Sagrada Familia, the most unique and beautiful church I have ever seen. Unlike many of the other churches we've been into the Sagrada Familia started its construction in the 1800s. It was really cool to see something in the start of its history rather than the end. From the outside the church is a culmination of 4 or 5 different designs, owing to the fact that so many architects have been put in charge over the years. Inside, its like nothing you've ever seen before. Everywhere you turn there is something new and unique to see. It is all so different that you would never think it would work together, but somehow it does and it adds to the wonder and color of the place. I was really happy we got to go see such an amazing part of living history before heading back to Bonn for two weeks of tests, studying, and lots of tears.
