This weekend we traveled to
Budapest, and it was probably the budabest trip this semester. I fell in love
with the culture and people almost immediately. First we walked around the city
to enjoy the sights and sounds of the locals. We visited the famous chain
bridge, which linked Buda to Pest centuries ago. It is also the oldest bridge
in the city. We then went towards the fisherman’s Bastian which was full of
spires and looked incredible in the daylight. We then stumbled upon a labyrinth
that Dracula was supposedly imprisoned in with was kind of creepy once you were
in it. lots of figures from the opera house were on display but some were quite
disturbing and bloody, one room had heads of men lined against the wall with
bulging eyes, or eyes missing and blood dripping down. One section of the labyrinth
was even called the maze of darkness, where you are supposed to hold on to a
rope and follow the path. It was pitch black when it was done like that, and
pretty creepy. It was noted that some people even hear or see spectral beings
or clouds of white smoke. After that we went to go spelunking, which is where
you go into a cave and just crawl, climb, and shimmy your way through the path.
This was an incredible and unique experience that Hungary is well known for and
I highly recommend it, as long as you aren’t claustrophobic. We then saw the magnificent
castle that was near the water’s edge and enjoyed the view from up top.
The following day we went shopping
for a few little souvenirs and spent significant amounts of time studying (this
includes the previous two days as well). And then we headed over to the famous Hungarian
thermal baths which was an absolutely amazing way to finish up this study
abroad trip. It was so peaceful and relaxing sitting in the warm water, and
sometimes alternating between that and the sauna. The whole entire experience
was just blissful and I couldn’t have picked a better location for my last weekend
vacation.
