Karneval in the Rhineland!

Karneval is such a special time in Germany. Walking through the streets from Thursday to Tuesday, you see people dressed in costumes  as cowboys, soldiers, fairies, doctors, and anything else you could imagine going to work, school, parties, and the parades!

This year we had the special treat to be a part of one of the many parades during Karneval! Our costumes were blue or orange wigs, an AIB hoodie, and a world balloon attached to the top of our wigs.

Grandparents to infants lined the streets in fun and bright costumes screaming "Carmela" (candy)  as music played from the floats. Some people watched the parade from their windows and called for "Carmela"  and candy was thrown at their open window sills. We each got bags full of candy to throw but the majority of us ran out halfway through! But, don’t worry. The children still got plenty. My host brother and his cousin managed to collect a whole trash bag full of candy and snacks! I was shocked. Like, how do you collect that much candy?! It is enough for an entire year!!

Karneval was definitely an amazing and unique experience and I'm so glad I had the chance to participate in something so unique to the Rhineland!
