This week was both very interesting and very busy. It was busy because of our first differential equations test and the increased class load since the arrival of Dr. Moore. However, the classes have thus far been very interesting for me, so the larger workload is not that much of a bother. This past was interesting also because of our trip to the University of Bonn's Surgical Unit. The group I was with witnessed an operation to fix someone's loose spine segment. We are able to watch the surgery next to the anasthesiologist, which offered the best view. The anasthesiologist gave us an overview of anasthetics and what he was doing as well.
The surgery really made me realize the kind of tissues that surgeons need to cut and dig through to get to the damaged body part. The surgery itself was the longest of all the surgeries witnessed by any of the groups that day; we had split up to watch different surgeries earlier that day. While the other groups were able to witness two complete surgeries, the surgery I was witnessing was not even close to being over by the time we had to leave. Overall, it was an enlightening experience that made quite an impression on me. Unfortunately, I have no pictures to display as they are not allowed in the hospital.
