Germany is quite different then I expected. Since getting
off the plane and living with a family I can do nothing but sit still and hold on. It feels like my trip to Mexico for Spring break where we were
consistently do something, but got refreshed at the same time. Today we toured
Bonn, and saw some of the magnificent sites like the Rhine to some of the old
Roman Catholic Churches that are still in use today. Since we have been in
Bonn, the weather has also had a huge role on places we have visited. For
instance, in the early mornings there is generally a gentle breeze that
consistently hits you as you walk from your bus stop to a quiet coffee shop.
But as the day goes by the wind seems to die down and a harsher temperature arises,
and you almost want to take off your jacket because it seems like it’s twenty
degrees hotter. This lasts for a good two hours or so but then becomes less
true as the sun begins to set around 6:00 P.M. Afterwards the wind picks up and
it feels like your nose will fall off because it’s too cold. This effected our
weekend quite a bit while we scavenger hunted for old landmarks across Bonn
Saturday. In which, because of the weather, they gave us warm wine which in our
language translates to mold wine. Apparently, they drink that a lot here to
stay warm during the harsh winters as well as during holidays.
While this
happened one day, another day was also filled with adventure when we visited a
vineyard where we saw vines waiting for winter to be over to bloom so that
future wine may be produced. At this vineyard, we visited a castle at the top
of a hill where we shared some wine which was very bitter but relaxing at the
same time and saw the sun set over a beautiful valley of vines and houses. The
wine of course was occupied by a wow every time it was consumed and not because
I wanted to make special effects. We then were invited to stay and eat at the
winery where they served us super (as they like to say here in English) beef
and potatoes as well as three different types of wine which made for a relaxing
evening.
We also just started classes and from the looks of it I won't be falling asleep anytime soon. Dr. Wasser is so knowledgeable and willing to take the time out of the day to talk to you it makes it a bit more enjoyable then a lot of the classes I have taken in the past. Besides that though, the math classes might get really hard really quick because from what I hear from BMEN 211 is that it takes parts of Math 308 or DFQ which haha lucky me I haven't taken. But at least I won't be the only one that will struggle with that issue. The history of medicine class is also interesting, because so far our professor is taking different approaches to diagnose issues that were very common back before Christ. For instance, he talked about how from what we know from the Bible and some paintings drawn from the Bible and how we interpret it we can discover what diseases they had. We also looked at ancient manuscripts and rock formations because they also provide clues as to what was the leading cause of death might have been back then.
But all in all a great turn of events in my classes and my adventure abroad as been extremely thrilling and I can't wait to see more and I
wish you guys could see it! I’ll post again soon. And as they say in German,
auf wiedersehen or goodbye.
