Week 3: Rome was Amazing

After the end of this third week, I have come to appreciate having our own cars to drive wherever we want back in the states.

This week was mostly just the normal classes, with a museum trip in the middle. All of the classes are going really well except for differential equations which is very confusing and requires a lot more work then the others. In our medical device design class, we got were given the instructions on our semester project that isn't a part of the EnModes cooperation. We are supposed to reverse engineer an electric toothbrush and rebuild it in a 3D building program called SolidWorks. I'm honestly super excited to start working with this program and seeing what I can do with it. Apparantly it is a great program to build your own 3D printing plans so I will definitely be using that in the future with my 3D printer. As for the Museum trip, we went to the Horst-Stoeckel Museum which is all about the history of anesthesia. It was a very interesting tour, and what blows my mind the most is how Dr. Wasser knows everything about what is in the museum and gives us a tour of the place himself.

On Monday night we went to a random showing of an english movie that hadn't been released yet so we thought that it might be the new How to Train Your Dragon movie or maybe Alita: Battle Angel. Sadly when it said not released yet, they meant in Europe because apparently they release it first in the US and then maybe they have to translate it and then they release it in Europe? If that's true, that means that I might now be able to watch the new HTTYD movie until I get back to the states but by then I will have to wait until it gets released on DVD... The movie ended up being "Can You Every Forgive Me?" which was a movie that I had never seen before and wouldn't have watched it if I had gone on my own. The sad thing about it showing at 10:30pm was that when we got out, the VRS app said that we wouldn't be home until 4am... So me and Sid went and got some drinks while we were waiting for our night bus and then finally got home super tired but it was a great experience.

On Wednesday, I woke up and saw the snow on my skylight and knew it would be a good day.
We had a free period that day right before lunch so we all got to go out in the backyard of the AIB and we had a miniature snowball fight until it was time to go to lunch.
Then after all of our classes that day, we went out to the park in front of the AIB and had a giant snowball fight with almost everyone in our program with the teams being BMEN against BIMS. Obviously I'm gonna be biased and say that BMEN won but we weren't really keeping score, we were just having fun. Once we started to get tired of the snowball fight, we started making a snowman that ended up being huge. We had three balls that were about 2-2.5 feet in diameter and we were wondering how we were gonna put it together since it was so huge but we managed to do it and it was about 7 feet tall or so. We all got pictures with it and then it started to fall over so we had Josh tackle it and then we had a small snowball fight with its remains.

This weekend we went to Rome and the seven of us had a blast (maybe with the exception of Sid who doesn't really like taking pictures of ruins and statues and old buildings which is basically all there is to do in Rome...). Our flight left so early in the morning that we had an interesting time getting to the airport on time. Once we got to Rome that Friday morning, half of us went to the Colosseum and the other half went to the hostel that they were staying at to drop off their stuff. On our way to the Colosseum, we went through a park and since we were on the top of a hill going up to the Colosseum, we didn't realize that we had seen it for the part few minutes since we could only see the top level of it sticking up. We went through and took many many pictures like the tourists we are and walked around for an hour or two. We then went to lunch and had some amazing Italian pizza and then we went to what we thought was Palentine Hill but it just went to this quaint little church on a hill. It turned out that Palentine Hill and the Roman Forum had closed early that night so we didn't get to walk through it... We then went into the town and started walking around and we saw some pillars at the end of the street and went to go take some pictures and when we were dine, we turned around and there were ruins all around us. So for the next 3-4 hours, we walked around Rome following this trail of ruins, taking over 200 pictures of all of the statues, ruins, and ancient buildings that we saw.

That next day we went to the Vatican museum and got the audio guide and walked through the amazing collection of hundreds of busts and statues. There were so many things to do and see there and we walked around through most of the exhibits for about 4 hours or so, going through the Sistine Chapel along the way. Even though it wasn't allowed to take pictures in the Chapel, we did anyway because I wanted a picture of "The Creation of Adam" on the ceiling. Once we were done with the Vatican, we headed out to go see the St. Peters Basilica which was right down the road. The only problem was that we went the wrong way around the Vatican City so we ended up walking around the whole thing to the entrance of the Basilica. At least now we can say that we have walked around a whole country... Also the sad part is that we got to see the plaza in front of the Basilica but they were having a special Mass event so you couldn't get in unless you had bought a ticket beforehand. We ended up just going back to the Airbnb and waited to go out for dinner, since after all it was Madison and Marcus' birthdays. So we went out to a great Italian place for dinner and had some wine and tiramisu, both of which were amazing. We then went out to a bar and had some drinks to celebrate.

The last day we were there, we went to quite a few places on foot. We first went to the Trevi Fountain which was such an incredible work of art. They had a little fountain off to the side of the sculpture that you could drink out of and of course I did cause it's not every day that you get to say you have drank water from the Trevi fountain!

We then walked to the Pantheon which was pretty monumental. Just to think that the people back then were able to build something like that without modern equipment made it even more impressive.

After that we went to another fountain/plaza and it made me realize that the Romans must really like the Egyptians cause they have Egyptian obelisks at all of their monuments. On our way to the Spanish Steps, we got some gelato and I split off from the group for a bit because I saw a sign for the Ferrari store and I knew I had to go.
Everything there was so cool but very expensive... I ended up just buying a keychain that cost 25€ because the Ferrari flag was the same price but I didn't have enough room for it in my backpack... I then met back up with the group at the Spanish Steps and we kept on going. We walked to a bus stop after we went through and saw the church at the top of the Spanish Steps and hopped on a bus but quickly hopped off after someone in our group(Madison) got nervous since we didn't have bus passes. It was honestly a good idea but that meant we had to walk the rest of the way to the catacombs that we were going to see. We walked for the next 20 minutes or so and made it there 30 minutes before they closed, just enough time to get a tour in. Once the tour was over, we walked to the bus stop and as the bus was coming our way we waved our bus passes that Madi had bought before the catacombs at the driver and he looked at us and just drove straight past us... So instead of waiting to catch the next one and risk that happening again, we walked to the metro to head to the airport. We bought train tickets and rushed to the airport, thinking that we weren't gonna get therein time but we got there and had enough time for dinner so we were good. We then got in the line for boarding and after waiting for a bit, we realized that we were in the line for the gate next to us and that our gate had almost finished boarding... so we rushed on and flew back to Cologne. We then waited for the bus to Bonn to get there and it was running late. So once we got on and were on our way I checked when my tram was gonna get to Bonn Central for me to take home and I realized that I was gonna have 3 minutes to go from the bus station to the underground tram station... So when we got off the bus a few of us ran to the underground and right as I was running onto the platform, my tram was pulling on and not even 10 seconds after I got on, it left the station so I must have had some luck on my side cause I got there just in time.
