On Tuesday, we
arrived in Vienna. Though sunny, the cities frigid temperatures kept us chilly
as we headed from our hotel to city center. There, we waited in the frigid air
tired (we all had to catch 4 am cabs to the airport) and , of course, chilly.
However, something came up the stairs which immediately caught our attention
and raised our spirits. It was a plague doctor from the 14th century. Strange,
the sight should have filled us with fear but ,well, just look at the outfit.
We proceeded to take
a tour with this man clad in black named Dr. Schnabel (Dr. Beak). Throughout the city, we took various
"remedies" for the plague which has swept through Vienna multiple
times including cloves and vinegar (yuck). We also stopped in the most ornate lecture room I have ever seen.
The more I traveled through the city, the more I was awed by the
wealth of the former Austrian Hungarian empire. Not only was it wealthy in
terms of gold, marble, and stone
but
also its wealth in terms of talent. This empire was the home of
many famous people including Beethoven, Mozart, and Strauss.
Our tour finished in
the center of town where we sang a song in German and then went off to eat
"lunch.". A
group of us went to a place called Demel which is famous for its delicious
desserts. Because one of my favorite movies is the Sound of Music, I had to get
some "crisp apple strudel" and at Dr. Wasser's recommendation, I also
got a jelly donut. It was absolutely delicious, super, and scrumptious.
