So our trip back from Munich was not as flawless as I made it out to be. It actually was a little stressful. All I wanted to do was go to bed but noooo, DB was late again (it was an hour and a half late getting to Munich). I thought german transportation was supposed to be more reliable than this? Up until this past weekend everything had been smooth sailing (besides that one time I went to the wrong airport...). I think that since it was Easter the trains were a little bit crazy because everyone was traveling.
So on our second of three total trains back to Bonn we encountered another delay, one that would make us miss our connection in Mainz. Thankfully our loud, slightly accented English finally came in handy. After discussing with each other questions about what was just said in German over the loud speaker a man came over to our section of the train and said, "I couldn't help but over hear your confused English. I'm originally from North Carolina, do you guys need help?" Couldn't have been more perfect timing! Turns out he'd been in Germany teaching English after his own study abroad trip about 20 years ago (before we were all born haha). Someone is really watching out for us. So he rode with us until Mainz and helped us get a taxi voucher (that DB completely pays for!) and even called for two taxis when we got to Mainz. He lived there with his partner so he had the phone number on his cell. Apparently him and his partner had recently taken a trip to Portugal and Spain and if it hadn't been for a local helping them with the ferry it could've ended badly. So he totally understood what we were going through! Now it's up to us to lend a hand to someone else who looks like they need help!
Finally after a 165 km and 270 € taxi ride (like I said, DB paid for it...just thought I'd clarify again, it's a lot of money) we made it home and could finally get some sleep! Also, for a brief minute on the autobahn, our taxi driver went 220 km/h (about 130 mph) so that was an experience in itself!
