A Hidden Gem
Duderstadt?? Where is that? To be honest, I still don't really know...somewhere in the East... But we had one of our coolest educational excursions there. In the middle of this tiny, manure smelling city (reminded me of Lubbock, Texas haha) was Ottobock. This company is one of the world leaders in prosthetics manufacturing and research. They had an entire day of stuff planned for us!! We showed up around 9 and toured the show room and spent some time learning how all of their products worked. Then we had a quick coffee break before a lecture on lower limb prosthetics. So it's been a pretty long week and I wasn't super excited for the 2 hour scheduled lecture but it was awesome. The guy who gave the lecture has been working at Ottobock for several years and was an amputee himself! So the lecture was not only educational on the mechanics side but was also insightful into the life of someone with a prosthetic leg. It's not everyday that you get to question someone like that. He was super nice and welcomed all kinds of questions. After the lecture they prepared lunch for us. In a way I felt like I was being wined and dined. The lunch was super tasty and there were even desserts. Maybe we were being wined and dined because after the lunch we had a quick presentation from human resources. She invited us all to apply for internships or graduate work with them. Afterwards we had a guided tour through the production line and distribution center. It really put the size of the company in perspective. The place was huge and there were boxes everywhere!! Overall a great trip to that random town.
