Aachen, Artificial Hearts, and Charlemagne

Only an hour and a half from our base in Bonn is the nice city of Aachen. It is home to the Helmholtz Institut and the famous cathedral of Charlemagne.  The department of cardiovascular engineering of the Helmholtz Institut was awesome. First we sat through a lecture as a member of it described what all it is that they do. It was very interesting and definitely one of my favorite lectures of the semester. We had the opportunity to tour the facility and it was great seeing the students working their using multiple programs that we are learning in class and how our education as biomedical engineers could be applied to a career. It was also very cool to see an artificial heart being tested. The cathedral of Charlemagne, often referred to as the “Imperial Cathedral”, and the cathedral treasury tour was better than expected.
