An On Time Look at Week 2

Week 2 has turned out to be a little bit slower than Week 1, mostly because the homework has been rolling in.  We have a 211 test on Monday, so no BMEN kids will be traveling this weekend.  So, the highlight of the week has been our visit to Cologne on Tuesday.  As soon as we left the Hauptbanhof  in Cologne, our jaws hit the floor.  There, in front of us, stood Cologne Cathedral: a massive 157m-high testament to Gothic architecture.  Our jaws remained on the floor for a good five minutes; this cathedral is easily one of the most impressive building's I've ever seen.  We went inside briefly for an organ concert and had a few minutes to take pictures after, although we couldn't really get a great view of the casket of the three wisemen.  (The bones of the three wisemen are said to be encased within an ornate golden casket behind the altar, which is why the cathedral is sometimes referred to as the Shrine of the Three Kings.)  Later on, after our tour of the city, we got to up to the roof of the cathedral (~70m up) and look around.  The view was incredible and we were all able to see the structure in much greater detail.  I have to admit, the height made most of us (myself included) a bit uneasy, and we were all thankful to be back on the ground at the end of the tour.  We also managed to find a deal on Berliners (2 for 1) and then a great little gelato place.  In typical tourist fashion, we decided why choose one when you can eat both...and so we did, and they were delicious.  On the excursion, we also visited the old Gestapo office in Cologne, from the offices on the upper floors to the prison in the basement.  I have honestly been impressed with all of our many tours so far; each of our guides has really known their stuff and been able to communicate it.

That concluded our visit, and the rest of our week has more or less been school, with the exception of becoming official citizens of Bonn (whoo*).

Until Vienna,

Claire
