Visitors, Exam Review and Rugby

This week has been fairly uneventful.

We had a visitor from A&M; professor Biswas. He gave several lectures about the design process with an emphasis on the design of medical devices. There was also a lecture about patent laws and the habit that major companies have of suing their competition for patent violations. We also had a zoom meeting with the people at enmodes where we were able to pitch some of our initial ideas and ask more detailed questions about the device. Despite four meetings this week we didn't have much time to work together on the project because all our time was devoted to the lectures. However, during the meeting with enmodes I was able to fill four notebook pages with ideas. It is reminding me a lot of the first days of build season and The Spring Konstant (high school FIRST Robotics team). We spent those days scribbling crazy ideas in notebooks, most of which wouldn't work.

BMEN 211 is still a nightmare. I barely understand anything that's going on. In lectures I'm just copying down what Blanche is writing and not following any of it. I finished the homework (mostly) but I'm not sure its all correct. The test is on Monday and according to Reagan won't be nearly as bad as the homework. The review was alright, only one question was hard to follow. If the exam is like the review then hopefully I'll be alright. Then of course, I need to figure out the next unit but that's a problem for after Vienna.

Physiology and history are both going fine. History is a lot more interesting than I expected. I am again behind on the reading notes for physiology but our test isn't until March so I have time to catch up. Most math lectures involve technical difficulties of some sort but otherwise its ok. I still haven't finished the Diff. Eq. homework for this week but it shouldn't take too long.

On Tuesday there was a movie night hosted by an AiB student worker. Elizabeth, Errin and I went to get dinner beforehand; we tried a burger place in Friedenzplaz (spelling is probably butchered). Then we went back to AiB and after a couple of attempts found the right room. There was some debate about which is the best Shrek movie we wound up watching the first one (which is definitely the best one). Three of us from A&M showed up and then a large group from Lafayette (Pennsylvania) turned up forty minutes later.

This weekend was mostly uneventful. I spent most of it studying for BMEN 211. The Six Nations Rugby Tournament also kicked off this weekend. The first match was Wales vs Ireland; Wales got fairly well thrashed. Ireland are looking terrifyingly good and I don't like Scotland's chances when we have to face them. Next was the Calcutta Cup. After a nail-biting eighty minutes Scotland just managed to scrape a victory for the third year in a row. It's a very good time to be a Scottish rugby fan. The Sunday game was probably the best; as far as entertainment goes anyway. Italy vs France, it was back and forth the whole time. Italy scored two tries and a few penalties that put them two points ahead at the seventy minute mark. In the last five minutes France managed to get over the line and scored the five points to put them back on top but it was very close. By the end I was routing for the Italians; they hardly ever do that well and it would be great to see them win as long as it's not against the Scotts. Honestly the whole thing made me terrified for Scotland's chances in the upcoming weeks. We can play really well but we have also been known to make a real pig's ear of the whole thing. You never know though... this could be our year. But I doubt it.
