Easter at the Vatican, or Villa Burghese

Howdy!! This past weekend was Easter weekend and a couple of us ( Hannah, Reagan and Jake) all had the amazing privilege to spend the entire weekend in Roma, Italia and it was absolutely amazing.

We started off EARLY friday morning by spending the night at Hannah's house in order to catch a 4:30am taxi to our 6:30 am plane, super early so we were super tired. But after arriving to sunny and beautiful Rome, we quickly awoke and took it all in! We walked and checked in to our nice little nook and cheap of an apartment and started with the Colosseum!

The line was crazy long and closing quickly, so we bought a tour from one of those sketchy people that come up to you in line and offer a line jump tour. This was an excellent choice because it was valid for 2 days, so the next day we planned on hitting the Roman Forum and Palatino. So we went into the Colosseum and it was a really cool place! All of the Roman architecture and structures were so fascinating not only because they were flat out incredible, but so genius too! The Romans really knew what they were doing in terms of engineering, architecture, and durability of buildings. Tomorrow we would find out that Romans had central heating units for their apartments along with running water from aqueducts. We snagged a couple pictures and went to a nearby park.

At this point we were exhausted, failing miserably at throwing the frisbee to eachother, so we decided to get some solid rest so we wouldn't be cranky the entire weekend. We walked back to our apartment and took a great 3 hour nap, and then went back out to Pizzeria Luzzia, a delicious pizzeria and enjoyed some good pizza and wine. And to end the night, we watched Mean Girls, because how else do you end your first night in Rome??

The next morning we slept in and walked over to the Roman Forum and Palatino. It was another beautiful day in Rome and we enjoyed walking over to the Roman ruins again. We met up with our tour guide after throwing the frisbee for a little bit in a beautiful park, and walked through the Roman Ruins. Our tour guide was absolutely fantastic, very fluid and very interesting to listen to. By the end of the tour, he said he works in a history archive and knows a ton of secrets and small things of Rome and was offering a tour that night over the things he knew. We strongly considered doing it the next night and told him we would let him know, we then rushed to grab lunch and gelato(of course) and ran to the Vatican because it was closing soon. By the time we got to the vatican it was already closed, and there was a long line for the mass that night at 8:30, keeping in mind it was 3:30 with hundreds of people in line. Even though it was closed, we got to see the outside of the Vatican which still was gorgeous, then we spontaneously decided to go on the secrets tour with our guide Alex.

We met up with Alex and went on the tour with a couple of hours and saw some realllly cool things! Including Michealangelo's hidden tomb before he was stolen, his home, some secret chapels, other magnificent chapels, and an underground structure from Roman times in 55 B.C, possibly within a stones throw of where Julius Caesar was murdered! It was a fantastic tour and we befriended the tour guide. He stopped us at a restaurant where you just walk in, sit, and an italian grandmother just cooks a 4 course meal for you, you don't order anything and it was fantastic!! After all this we went home and got a good night's rest.

The next morning we slept in again, and ventured to a BEAUTIFUL park called Villa Burghese. The sun was still shining and the weather was PERFECT, so we spent probably 5-6 hours at this park reading our books, throwing the frisbee, enjoying our peaceful Easter and it was fantastic. After the park we went to Hard Rock Cafe, since italian food was getting to be a lot. Had some delicious burgers, then visited a beautiful fountain called Trevi Fountain. It was really pretty especially at night because the water was just so blue and the statues were marvelous. After this we walked home, hit the hay, and woke up the next morning to head to the airport and finally make it home.

Overall it was an awesome weekend. A restful one too, it wasn't minute by minute itinerary which I really enjoyed, I got to relax and enjoy Rome and it was a much needed weekend. These past couple months of traveling have really put a toll on me and I am really exhausted, so I am definitely enjoying these next few weekends of no traveling! Regardless I am still so thankful for all of this, beyond thankful. I still worry I haven't taken it all in as I should, but I do know I have enjoyed all my traveling thus far. Its amazing.

Bis Bald!
