What happens at Karneval stays at Karneval
Well, 'tis the season, folks. While our fellow Aggies are driving 5 hours to get to Bourbon street to celebrate the beginning of the Lint season, the Germans do it a little differently, Karneval. First off, everyone is in costume. Not like "oh, let me throw on a red shirt and call myself Mario." Their costumes are GOOD. Full body animal suits, gladiators (with bare chests in freezing weather), and a multitude of pirates and sailors. Karneval is basically the worlds biggest block party. We were in the Bonn suburb of Beuel, right in front of the old cathedral. There was a band playing live music and the entire city was decorated with karneval flags and even laundry lines hung up (Beuel was considered the washers suburb of Bonn). Thursday was called Weiberfastnacht which roughly translates to "Night of the Women," so it was all about the girls today. Any man caught wearing a tie was fair game and women could cut off his tie and then give him a peck on the cheek--leaving a trail of red lipstick on all the men she has kissed. And this party doesn't just happen for one day, we have 4 more days of this. I think it is safe to say that Karneval is the most fun I have ever had, and it all occured before noon. All I have left to say is bring on the rest of the weekend.
