I titled this post as such because Budapest was a pleasant surprise just as how Austen's rendition of the Chili's baby-back ribs on the streets of Budapest was an unexpected surprise. We got into Budapest at like 10 ish pm. At this point I wasn't too impressed by what I saw of the city in the area we got off from the bus. However this soon changed as we got settled and began exploring the next day.
Friday night was a chill night; Austen, Nicky, Kate and I played some card game (exploding kittens) before we retired for the night. On Saturday, we began the day in the Szchenyi baths spa where we all got to relax and rejuvenate as we enjoyed the warm bath in the dead of winter. We opened up our pores in the sauna room (mint flavored) and closed up our pores in the ice cold baths. Katie, Mitchell, Emily and I then went to the steam room. This was so relaxing and I could easily spend a lot of time in there. Budapest is well known for their baths so it was really nice to be able to go to one of the thermal baths! It was such a fun experience.
After this we went to a traditional Hungarian restaurant called Csarnok Vendeglo. The prices for food were in the thousands but in HUF. This was weird to see because it felt like everything was expensive when they are actually really cheap. After our big lunch, we went back to our air bnb, rested a little and headed back out. We hiked the Gellert hill and got a bird eye view of Budapest. We then walk along the bridge right across from the parliament building to get to it. The building was so beautifully lit up. Budapest was the most beautiful city I have ever seen at night. After hiking and walking a lot, at this point we were all exhausted and super hungry. We began to walk how place to get food. It took is about another hour and we ended up at a burger joint called Zing burger. Maybe I am saying this because I was so hungry but the street angus beef burger I had tasted like the best burger I had ever had. It was so good that I didn't even take a picture!
After eating we went back to the air bnb and retired for the night. On Sunday, Izzie, Kate, Nicky and I went to a castle. We saw a big skating rink with a ton of professionals skating. It was so relaxing and intimidating to watch them skate as they were so good! We went back our place and packed our belongings and went to get lunch at cafe bistro which was so fancy. I got a chicken soup but I was not you pleased with it. Nonetheless the place and the service we received was worth me going there. We then went to the underground hospital called hospital in the Rock, located under the Buda Castle. The hospital took care of the wounded and dead during the Siege of Budapest in the WW2. The hospital was so small and it was hard to believed it housed about 700 wounded people, a building only meant for about 200. It was very interesting to see the memorial to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Going to the museum, made me to more clearly understand the effect on war on the people's lives and the depravity of atomic bombs.
After this, on our way to the airport, we got a glimpse of the city of Budapest at sunset, which was absolutely stunning. We got to the airport and headed back to Bonn!!
