PSA: There's a great Mexican Restaurant in Berlin

Well, "hell week" was….hell. The week consisted of lots of studying, lots of project designing, and few hours of sleep. Apart from the school work, our program also got to observe surgeries at the Universitätsklinikum right here in Bonn. This was such an incredible experience. All of us shadowed surgeons and got to see a wide array of procedures. I got to watch the removal of 5 screws and a large rod from an 18 year old boy’s femur and the resection of muscle tissue from an older man. Both were extraordinary to watch, especially from such a close distance. Modern medicine never ceases to amaze me, which is one of the reasons I want to pursue the medical school route of this major.

After a busy school week, a few of us planned a weekend trip to Berlin.  I wasn’t really sure what to expect from Berlin, but I was pleasantly surprised.

We traveled there via a night bus. It was such a great price…but it was difficult to get a good night’s sleep. We arrived in Berlin around 7 am completely exhausted but eager to sight-see. The first thing we decided to do was a free walking tour of the city. We started at the Brandenburg Gate, saw the Holocaust Memorial, the top of Hitler’s bunker, remnants of the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, and countless other sights. That evening we ate a Mexican restaurant, and it was so good!! Maybe it was just the nostalgia, but man those were some good chips and salsa. After a tasty meal, we headed to a pub crawl that we had signed up for earlier that day. The rest of the night was a blast! We went to 5 different pubs/clubs and met people from all over the world. My favorite people we met were from London. Naturally I tried out my best British accent upon meeting them. They thought I was from south London. I could only keep up the front for so long before laughing and explaining I was actually from Texas. We didn’t get back to our hotel until the wee hours of the morning, but it was worth it.

The next day got off to a slightly late start, as we were trying to make up for the sleep deprivation. That day we saw the Berlin Cathedral, the Reichstag, and the Berlin Victory Column (which we climbed all 285 steps to see a fantastic view). That evening we ate at a German restaurant and finished off the trip at Dunkin Donuts with great conversation waiting for our night bus back to Bonn.

This past week and weekend were exhausting but fun all the same. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
